A global consortium facilitating the ethical return of cultural artifacts to their communities of origin.
Restoring Dignity, Reclaiming History.
For centuries, countless cultural artifacts have been removed from their original environments, often under circumstances of colonial rule or conflict. This displacement is not merely a loss of objects, but a disruption of cultural identity, spiritual practice, and historical continuity. Our Heritage & Repatriation initiative is dedicated to addressing these historical injustices through a framework of dialogue, science, and respect.
“The removal, destruction, or unauthorized transfer of cultural artifacts… constitutes a violation of civilizational rights and shall be addressed through international legal mechanisms… An international framework shall be established to facilitate the return and restitution of cultural artifacts…”
— Articles 1 & 9, Universal Declaration of Civilization Rights

The Repatriation Consortium is a global alliance convened by the CRI. It brings together museums, government bodies, academic institutions, and community representatives to act as a neutral, trusted third party. Our goal is to move beyond adversarial claims and foster collaborative solutions for the ethical return of cultural heritage.

We use the science of Civilizology for independent, scientifically-backed provenance research to establish an object’s history.
We facilitate fair, transparent, and respectful dialogue between holding institutions and claimant communities, guided by CRRS principles.
We provide legal and logistical frameworks to support the physical return of artifacts and foster new forms of long-term partnership.
The Consortium provides a suite of services to navigate the complexities of repatriation.
Independent, scientific verification of an artifact’s origin and history.
Facilitation of constructive conversations between all stakeholders.
Providing CRRS-compliant agreement templates for loans, returns, and partnerships.
Advising on the technical aspects of cultural heritage transportation and care.
The Civi World platform is the operational backbone of the Consortium. The Civi Source marketplace allows institutions to securely and confidentially contract CRS-vetted provenance researchers, legal experts, and community liaisons, ensuring every step of the process is managed with professionalism and integrity.
A European museum holds a ceremonial mask acquired in the 19th century. Through the Consortium, they connect with certified representatives of the mask’s community of origin. Independent research confirms its provenance. Instead of a legal battle, a partnership is formed: the mask is returned for ceremonial use, while the museum receives a high-quality 3D scan and the rights to co-host a digital exhibit, creating a win-win outcome that fosters goodwill and deeper cultural understanding.
We recognize that repatriation is a complex issue with significant legal, ethical, and logistical challenges. Our framework is not about assigning blame; it is about creating a constructive path forward. By focusing on scientific verification, multi-stakeholder dialogue, and shared goals, we aim to transform contentious disputes into opportunities for collaboration and mutual respect.
Whether you represent a holding institution, a claimant community, or are a researcher in this field, the Repatriation Consortium offers a platform for constructive action.
Advancing the rights, science, and resilience of human civilizations.
